Fallout 3: Guided by Voices is a location-driven endurance and persistence challenge for Fallout 3 that strips away your autonomy and traditional quest progression. Instead of following the game's narrative or optimizing a leveling route, your movement across the Capital Wasteland is entirely dictated by the Great Wheel.
This run was entirely designed by C.O.T.A. and is currently patent pending.
The core narrative premise is that you have voices in your head that demand travel to specific, unrelenting coordinates on the map—and those voices are completely real. This challenge transforms the open-world RPG into a brutal, unpredictable survival experiment where you can instantly be directed into the most hazardous endgame sectors of the map at level one.
The original run of this challenge was completed over a period of one year and nine days, totaling approximately 150 hours of gameplay, which stands as the current record.
Official Ruleset
1. Location Selection
The Directive: Your destination is chosen exclusively via the Great Wheel containing all available map locations.
The Lock-In: Once a location is selected by the Great Wheel, you must travel to that location immediately. You cannot spin the Great Wheel again until your current location is officially cleared.
Retirement of Locations: Once a location meets all clearance criteria, it is permanently removed from the Great Wheel pool.
2. Movement & Navigation Restrictions
The Straight-Line Rule: You must travel from your current position to the designated location in as straight a physical line as possible. Deviation from this path is permitted only when structural terrain geometry makes forward progress completely impossible. You must navigate directly through whatever enemies, hazards, or radiation fields lie along that line.
Fast Travel Restrictions: Fast travel is strictly prohibited across the main Capital Wasteland map.
The D.C. Ruins Exception: Fast travel is permitted exclusively within the urban Downtown D.C. ruins, under the condition that you have already discovered the destination district naturally. You may fast travel to a discovered district to mitigate the physical debris walls blocking straight-line travel.
3. Location Clearance Criteria
A location is not considered "cleared"—and you cannot spin the Great Wheel again—until you fulfill both of the following conditions:
Quest Completion: All narrative tasks, side quests, or world encounters tied directly to that specific location must be fully completed.
Loot Extraction: Every unique weapon, special item, and high-value asset native to that location must be found and collected by you.
4. The Soft-Lock Provision
The Minimum Marker Rule: If completing the quests or acquiring the unique loot at a chosen location is mechanically or physically impossible due to level constraints or soft-locks, a new location may be generated.
The Condition: To trigger a re-spin under this rule, you must still physically travel to the destination and discover the location marker at a bare minimum.
The Penalty: The original location will not be removed from the Great Wheel pool and must be dealt with again if selected on a future spin.
Technical Setup
To maintain the integrity of the 150-hour endurance test without the frustration of constant engine instability, the run utilizes modern stability, performance, and engine-fix modifications. These updates improve visual fidelity, framerates, and crash resistance to help the game survive the length of your run, while leaving the core vanilla gameplay, combat mechanics, and item balance completely unaltered.
With that said, game crashes will absolutely happen. This is a nearly 20-year-old Bethesda game, and no amount of modding can completely tame the engine over a 150-hour window. Expect crashes, save frequently, and push forward anyway.
